Heavy Vehicle Weight Needs Correct Base Depth
A block paving driveway will only hold heavy vehicle traffic if the ground beneath it is excavated to a solid depth. We don't lay pavers over weak ground or thin sub-bases.
We dig out every single driveway to a standard depth of 250mm to 300mm before compacting any aggregate, creating a completely stable foundation that stops the finished pavers from sagging.
- 01 Compacted MOT Type 1 Over the excavated sub-grade, we lay a high-density sub-base using genuine MOT Type 1 aggregate. This is mechanically rolled and compacted to form a rock-solid foundation layer.
- 02 50mm Sand Screed Bed We apply and screen a precise 50mm layer of sharp sand directly over the compacted Type 1 base. This acts as the uniform laying course that the block setts seat into.
- 03 Edge Constraints & Joints Pavers are locked tightly into place against heavy-duty concrete edge restraints. We then brush premium kiln-dried jointing sand into the gaps and compact the surface to form the final interlocking matrix.

- Strong Interlocking Patterns Laying the blocks in a herringbone pattern creates a solid, interlocking grid. This is the strongest layout option for a driveway because it safely absorbs the weight of heavy cars turning their wheels without the blocks shifting or moving.
- Framed Border Accents We can frame the edges of your new driveway with a single or double row of charcoal blocks. This soldier course acts as a crisp, decorative border that outlines your front property neatly and contrasts beautifully with the main driveway colour.
- Hidden Manhole Covers Instead of leaving an ugly metal utility cover right in the middle of your new paving, we swap it out for a recessed tray cover. We then cut and fit matching blocks directly inside the lid so the manhole completely blends into the rest of your driveway design.

- Edge Restraints Every open edge is secured with concrete-backed restraints or heavy-duty kerb lines. This physical containment stops the blocks from spreading outwards over time.

How long does a block paving driveway installation take?
For a reliable build, we dig down 250-300mm, lay 150-200mm of MOT Type 1 aggregate, screed a 50mm sand course, and hand-lay the blocks. Depending on total square meterage and the layout pattern, an installation typically takes 4 to 6 days on site.
What block paving patterns work best for driveways?
A 45-degree or 90-degree herringbone pattern is the strongest layout choice. This positioning shifts vehicle load across a unified structural matrix, preventing the individual blocks from shifting under the braking and turning force of tyres.
Why does block paving sink, and how do you stop it?
Blocks sink when contractors skimp on groundwork or use a sub-base thinner than 100mm. We completely eliminate this risk by digging down to a standard 250-300mm depth, laying a heavy geotextile sub-grade membrane, and mechanically compacting 150-200mm of load-bearing MOT Type 1 aggregate.
Does block paving need edge restraints?
Yes. Without rigid containment, vehicle weight forces the perimeter blocks to slide outward, opening up joints and causing the driveway to fail. Every open boundary we build is locked tightly into place with heavy, concrete-backed edge restraints or concrete kerbs.
Can recessed manhole covers be used in block paving?
Yes. We remove existing cast-iron utility lids and fit recessed tray covers in their place. We then cut and lay standard 50mm block setts inside the tray so the lid patterns flow seamlessly with the rest of your driveway while maintaining full inspection access.
How do you finish and seal the block joints?
Once the blocks are laid on the 50mm sharp sand screed course, we brush fine kiln-dried sand across the entire driveway to fill the joints. We then pass a mechanical plate compactor over the surface to drive the blocks down, locking the sand tightly into the matrix.
